I DARE because the commentator said this was the longest war we had ever been involved in. I simply pointed out that there were two previous wars that lasted longer. Did I lie? I think not. Get down off your podium long enough to actually understand what someone is saying before you jump down their throat.

I understand what you were trying to say. I am addressing your last 2 statements, "Viet-nam lasted 7 1/2 years, and the ONLY reason we have to consider it a loss is because politicians wouldn't let the military do their job. Sound familiar?" It is implies that was the only reason and that the Congress was trying to hinder a noble war. What were we fighting for in Vietnam? Let's hear it.

My youngest son is your age. I was actually alive during Viet-Nam. All you know about it is something you read or a show you watched, or maybe even a Youtube video. We fought to keep south Viet-Nam from being over-run by Communist China after the French bailed out and left them there to fend for themselves.

I never said it was noble. It certainly wasn't conducted properly, and we lost 58,000 troops. Let me reiterate. I was simply bringing up the fact that the commentator was wrong. THIS WASN'T THE LONGEST WAR WE HAVE FOUGHT. DON'T put words in my mouth. Take a few years to grow up and get back to me.

So it was 58,226. At least 60,000 didn't die for such a waste so I am glad I was incorrect. We were supposed to give Indo China independence but instead we sided with the French because we wanted their support against the Soviets. We betrayed the Vietnamese whom we promised independence if they helped us root out Japanese forces. 80% would have voted for Ho Chi Min to be their leader but the US cancelled elections.

He had fought for their independence since WWI, trying to negotiate self government but he was always just brushed aside until the allies needed help in WWII. The South Vietnamese government was nothing but a French puppet. It was an autocrat government that didn't even have the support of its people.

We already went over this. I UNDERSTAND what the first point of your comment was directed too. I was referring to this "the ONLY reason we have to consider it a loss is because politicians wouldn't let the military do their job." What was the US military's orders in Vietnam bookhound? To create a 3 million Southeast Asian holocaust (4 million if you include the CIA coup of Indonesia of 1965) while ending the lives of 58,226 US service men and injuring many more?

Their orders were to hold back Communist China. But people back home complained and protested and politicians blustered and they were told "this far and no further" (the 53rd parallel) And they began being massacred. WE could have won that war easily were it not for the lack of support back home, and the interference of politicians.

Vietnam fought Communist China later on. That war was about Vietnamese independence. We couldn't have won the war unless we blasted the whole country into pieces. What would any of that accomplished? The Vietnamese didn't want us there and their country is doing well today.
