I don't think we should stay forever. We should stay until an Iraqi government is in place that can take over and maintain order and authority on its own. It is not close to being that yet, largely because for 4 years the security situation was stagnant or deteriorating and stability was never established so that progress could take place.

But how can we fix a situation that we started? It seems like you're saying we should stay forever and have some sort of presence forever, not saying that b/c you disagree with Richardson that you want us there forever, but what I'm reading from your comments is that you think we need to stay forever.

And it's bad for us, yet most Americans want our troops out. It's even more unpopular among Muslim countries Why would they take a burden for something we don't want to keep as a burden? We made the stupid mistake of invading Iraq, not them. It would be great if they would send troops, but they don't want to, would not be able to get their populations to support it, and so they won't. So we are stuck with the burden of trying to fix the situation that we screwed up.

I'm a college student too, like debates, and as a liberal democrat who used to support a timetable for withdraw, understand where the argument is coming from.

... continued so if we say what I just said then I think they will be willing to help. Remember that a stable Iraq is in everybody's best interests. I am enjoying this convo though, I'm just a college student using my intuition since I don't have any personal knowledge except for what I see on the news, this is just my oppinion, and thanks for being respectful of my views. I like good debates

I take your point, but the muslim countries know as well as we do that an unstable Iraq is bad for them. If we went to them and said "we screwed up, please help us to stabalize your region, they would help, Richardson is saying get our troops out, not necessarily completely disband from Iraq, he's willing to put airstrikes etc. to help out, but Iran, Syria, Jordan, they don't want the civil war to continue and go into their regions...

But I don't believe their are, they don't want to have their troops in the middle of this mess, especially given how unpopular the war is in the Muslim world. We have to clean up our own mess, other countries aren't going to do it for us. Right now the Iraqi military is not anywhere near strong enough to provide stability and security on the ground in Iraq for the average person. Our military is the only capable and willing of doing so at the moment.

We fuel the insurgency to a certain belief, but we also put a large damper on the sectarian violence, so it's a trade off. The former isn't particularly directly preventing reconciliation among Iraqis, the latter is. Replacing out troops with ones from Muslim allies would be great... if there were Muslim countries willing to send there troops into Iraq.

Xerxes: That's a good point, but don't you think that our presence is fueling the insurgency? That has been said before by a few military generals, if we get all our troops out and replace them with arabic and muslim countries I'm willing to bet that they would be able to bring peace better than American troops can, not saying American troops aren't good at what they're doing, but without a federalized system and our troops out and diplomacy, we will never see stability in Iraq
