Reformatting is a last resort, when all else fails and you're looking at a system that won't even boot. And even then there are still options. I dread to think how much data has been lost to unnecessary reformats. Moosie

Definitely an unpleasant day, Zip. My first thought about the desktop is that you have a screwy connection. Your modem or router may be playing games with you, and a complete power-down/restart (like pulling ALL the plugs on it, letting it rest a few minutes, and doing a "cold restart") might correct it. As to the laptop, I've avoided Vista like the plague it is, so I can't help, other than to say that I've heard of other cases of its total failure to work with WMM. Moosie

yeah, but still, with that much trouble I would backup data, then reformat my harddrive. I reformat at least every 6 months for GP (general purpose) or until I buy a new computer ( about every two years)

For me it's all easy, funkwurm. I build the things, and I've dealt with them since they consumed entire buildings in the 60s. Are you an average user? Have you actually tried Ubuntu? Why should I believe that you "know"? Just wondering...

Shut down and restart. Check all connections. Then, delete some vid's. I'm sure your computer is full by now. I delete all vid's after I post them. Keeps the computer running smoothly. Also, some programs are running in the background even if you are not using them. Check in bottom right hand of screen for those.

I partition my drive so that my system files are on one partition and my data is on the other one. Either that or use two hard drives. That way, when you format, you only have to format your system partition and you don't have to go through the trouble of backing everything up and reloading it onto the drive.

Linux is good too if you have the patience to learn it.

Oh, and you can run Linux software on Mac OS X as well which is cool. I'm running the GIMP and OpenOffice. Way cheaper than buying the commercial equivalent and they are much better software as well. They have better features and less bugs. Open source FTW!
