Description: When Apocalypse Now played theatres in 1979, it had an eyepopping set of psychedelic end credits showing the destruction of the Kurtz compound. In most video releases, the credits show over a black screen (with the same eerie music), because director Francis Coppola removed the visuals, concerned that the audience would think that Willard ordered the compound destroyed after he left, and he wanted to keep it ambiguous. This is original sequence in full (minus the onscreen credit text). They were probably THE greatest end credits of all time ... I saw it several times theatrically in 1979 and the entire audience always stayed thru the credits to the very end, something pretty rare. I think we were also too stunned from the film to move. |

ProPharmaceuticals ::: Favorites There is more about this Ending, as it has very strong cuts and does not slide into view to view...to come to the point, I have the true story about why the ending is arranged this way, I have posted the version I arranged, "The End" on my Profile, I hope the Video Response with this Arrangement will be accepted as one who sees this first, than knows all about this piece of art... 07-09-01 09:28:32 __________________________________________________
diaynn22 ::: Favorites I love this ending. The filming and angles is a true work of art in itself. It shows to me how "Almighty" (God reference) went after Kurtz (temptation to play god). Horror on horror! I wonder who's methods were more unsound? Kurtz fighting the war the way it should be fought? Or "Almighty" exterminating all of Kurtz's so called children. Coppola should have left it as the ending and included it on Redux. 07-08-31 00:01:13 __________________________________________________
xylaphonemaster ::: Favorites Wether or not Coppola intended this as "the end" is irrelevant, when it's taken in that context I think it finishes the film off, since Willard's taken the final step and commited an act that took "genius" and "horror", and in a way became what he had anihialiated. I don't know if the fading in of the explosion at the start's intended to be the same thing or not, but this is more powerful and less ambiguous. 07-08-21 21:12:13 __________________________________________________
Szalami ::: Favorites I saw the movie serveral times, and I see this ending fro the frist time. So Capitan Willard commited a suicide by calling in the air strike, or he just wasn't back at the ship in time? 07-08-17 13:37:40 __________________________________________________
ms0362 ::: Favorites I've been looking for this for years. It changes the whole movie and Coppola should have left in in the video. It is the destrution of the compound. Willard had to erase what Kurtz had done and stood for. Thanks for finding this. I can believe he didn't even include it in Deux. 07-08-16 22:32:47 __________________________________________________
